Hong Kong's Foreign Currency Reserve Assets In February 2025

Share with -

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) recently shared the latest numbers on Hong Kong’s official foreign currency reserve assets. As of the end of February 2025, these reserves stood at US$416.4 billion, down slightly from US$421.5 billion at the end of January 2025. This figure reflects Hong Kong’s strong financial buffer, helping it weather global economic shifts.

The HKMA also noted that unsettled foreign exchange contracts amounted to US$0.5 billion at the end of February 2025, compared to none in January. Even with this small change, the reserves remain a powerhouse, representing:

  • Over five times the amount of currency circulating in Hong Kong.
  • About 38% of the Hong Kong dollar M3 (a broad measure of money supply).
